Joel Shields – 2002 Alumnus of The University of South Carolina School of Music
While at USC, Joel received a Master’s degree in Classical Guitar Performance under the direction of Christopher Berg, was a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. During this time, Joel worked for the School of Music as a graduate assistant for the Recital Hall, a Research Assistant for the Music History Department, and directed the community guitar prep program. In addition, he taught at the Hammond School, Music Depot, and worked part-time at The Classical Guitar Studio.
Beginning in 2000, Joel began working in the Music Library under Jennifer Ottervik. During his 3 years in the library (first as a student worker and then as a full-time Library Specialist), he was given the environment to develop the digital outreach of the library to the students, staff, and faculty on campus. In particular, Joel developed and digitized the workflow process and metadata for NetDM in its first two years of use. Also, he is proud to have had a part in the development of the Center for Southern African American Music and the Digital Sheet Music Project.
In 2003, Joel left USC and now works for the Washington Research Library Consortium as their web portal specialist providing IT research and development for 9 Universities in the Washington DC metropolitan region.
